FAQs

what is a compounding pharmacy?

A compounding pharmacy is a speciality pharmacy that can manufacture customised medication by combining, mixing, or altering medication and other ingredients. Compounding pharmacists create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. This is done by using specialised equipment, and sourcing unique ingredients.

Why do some people need compounded medications?

People may need a compounding pharmacy as their doctor has prescribed a medication that pharmaceutical manufacturers do not make.

Practitioners in hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities sometimes provide compounded drugs to patients when an TGA- approved drug is not medically appropriate to treat them. These include patient who have an allergy to a certain dye, gluten, lactose or preservatives and needs a medication to be made without it, or an elderly patient or a child cannot swallow tablets or capsules, and need an alternative form such liquid. There are many situations where compounded medications are needed and best utilised.
